Top 10 Mistakes People Make In New Relationships

The first year of a romantic relationship is key -- by the end of the year, the tone of your relationship is established and you each have a good idea of your mate's quality as a partner. That's why it's so important in the first year to not set your mate's expectations too high and not try to fit their mold of the perfect boyfriend or girlfriend.

From AskMen.com, here are the 10 biggest mistakes men and women make in that critical first year:

10. Showering each other with gifts. Some guys think spending money on a woman will make her like him more. But buying them a bunch of gifts is a bad idea. It suggests that you have little to offer other than material things or that you're trying to buy their love. Even worse, your sweetie may begin to expect gifts all the time.

9. Spending all your free time together. There are two major dangers here: First, it's a bad idea to give up your personal life and not see your friends anymore. Second, if you smother each other's own personal time, you may get sick of each other.

8. Letting them make all the plans. Guys, letting your girlfriend make all the decisions shows lack of backbone. And girls, if you sit back and let your boyfriend choose where to go and what to do, he'll get sick of always having to decide.

7. Meeting their friends and family too soon. It's unavoidable: when you meet your new love's friends or family, your every move will be under close scrutiny. It's a mistake to get to know their loved ones before you really know them well! When you're more comfortable with the relationship, you'll be more at ease when you meet them.

6. Not coming clean about your past. Whatever skeletons you're hiding, they'll come out sooner or later. You should tell your new love of any addictions you had or have, if you've been married or have kids, if you have an STD, etc.

5. Avoiding confrontation. Communication is often the only way to solve problems, so if you avoid talking about them, they'll only get bigger.

4. Taking each other for granted. One of the biggest traps people fall into is getting too comfortable. You stop going on dates, caring about your looks, being attentive. But if they are special to you, always treat them like it's your first month together.

3. Always initiating sex. When it comes to sex, initiative should be an equal game.

2. Forgiving their mistakes too easily. Both of you are on your best behavior during the first year together, so you shouldn't let their annoying habits slide! If you sweep these things under the rug, they'll blow up eventually.

1. Saying "I love you" too soon and too often. These 3 little words should be used frugally; otherwise, they lose their meaning. Save them for rare occasions and only say them when you really, really mean it.
